Simon Pearson of the Savings & Loans team has taken out another victory this year after he broke clear from the scratch bunch in the Keith Thurgood Memorial.
Report
The race was on from the gun with the strong scratch field which included Olympic champion Brett Aitken but had two noticable absenties, Chris Jongewaard & Russell Van Hout. The limit riders set off with a 27 minute advantage but this was never going to be enough as todath the wind played a major role. Winds kicked up to over 60kph along the coastal town which in turn meant for some very high speeds. Reports were that the scratch and block groups were riding in excess of 70kph with the wind at their backs.
Once the scratch bunch caught the 3 minute group the race immediately split apart. Riders were tailed off the back as the Savings & Loans and Orbea teams kept driving from the front.
Savings & Loans rode the perfect race with Simon Pearson jumping away on turn home to the finish. Pearson wouldn’t see the chasers until the finish as he held of for another big win.
Luxton of Orbea took the sprint for second just ahead of the first block rider Michael Stallard.
