Stage 1 – Saturday, July 7: U19 & women’s TT.
Bobridge & Whitelaw dominate opening day.
Full results, report & photos.
The Canberra junior and women’s tour kicked off in perfect weather with a time trial for the U19 men/women and senior women.
The weather was unusually warm for this time of the year, so all the riders were enjoying the racing in the sunshine. Racing was held at the newly built Stromlo Forest Park with it’s purpose built criterium track.
There were strong fields for both the U19 and women’s racing and the favourites proved to be the strongest.
Jack Bobridge (SASI) rode arguably one of the most dominating time trials in the tours history, winning by over a minute for the 24km course. Travis Meyer (Drapac Porsche) rode well, although admitted that losing a minute to Bobridge had put a dent in his overall chances already. A surprise ride by Sean Boyle showed that the South Australian team was the strongest with 4 riders in the top 12 (Bobridge, Boyle, Christos Winter & Tim Roe).
Vicki Whitelaw showed her time trialling ability by winning the opening time trial convincingly over Bridie O’Donnell and Louise Kerr. Whitelaw used her recent stint of racing in America to good use to win the 15km stage by over 30 seconds. An excellent ride by Carlee Taylor (CSC Team O’Grady) put her in 6th place an first U19 woman.
The yellow jerseys went to Bobridge and Whitelaw and they will try and defend it in the next few days.
