A patient Phil Deisel delivered a winning ride in the Peel Cycling Clubs road race at Baldivis last weekend.

Report:

It looked like another doubtful day with black clouds massing in the northwest and a cool breeze getting up. In spite of this we had 16 starters in two events A grade for 50km and C grade for 40.

In the A grade event the first lap set the pattern with a break of 3 riders, Bob Addy, Geoff Marshall and Brian Buck leading by 12 seconds. At the end of lap 2 and in a heavy downpour Phil Deisel had managed to get up with the leaders as Brian Buck dropped out of the lead group and eventually out of the race. This group of three remained dominant for the rest of the race with the remaining riders, initially spread far and wide and then gradually coming together in the final lap. At the finish it was Phil Deisel, Geoff Marshall and Bob Addy 1,2 and 3 with Russell Fryer, newly promoted to A grade, taking fourth some 3 minutes later The remaining riders came together and sprinted for 5th, 6th and 7th place at 11 minutes back with Laurie Longworth claiming 5^th spot.

In the C grade event the riders stayed in touch for the whole distance and the event came down to a crowded rush for the line. Phil Edwards, in good form of late, sprinted clear with 100 metres to go and held on to his lead until the line with Alan Cluning and Joe Cox fighting hard for second and third place with Alan taking it by less than half a wheel.  Bob Norton held on ahead of the rest to finish fourth.

The State Team Time Trial Championships will be held this Sunday at Pinjarra with the next Club event a social ride also commencing at Pinjarra on Sunday 15 July.  The Club is also seeking assistance from its members to act as marshals for the up coming Pinjarra Classic Road Race on Sunday 29^th July.
